Oral/Aural Academic English for Graduate Students

The OAE course sequence is designed to support international graduate students whose first language is not English in their roles as teaching and research assistants. To this end, we focus on speaking and listening proficiency in  English, presentation and teaching skills, and intercultural awareness.

Three levels of classes are offered at the graduate level:

  • OAE 590 Intermediate Oral Academic English,
  • OAE 592 High Intermediate Oral Academic English,
  • OAE 594 Advanced Oral Academic English.

Students are required to start with the course that corresponds to their test placement score and then advance through OAE 594. (Undergraduates may elect to take cross listed OAE 190 or 194.) Students are placed through their "Speaking" section score on the IELTS, iBT TOEFL, TOEFL Essentials, or through evaluation of their Duolingo Interview.
