Rachel Corbman is a doctoral candidate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at
Stony Brook University. Her research and teaching interests include feminist and queer
studies; the history of U.S. social movements; feminist and LGBTQ activism; and critical
university studies. Her dissertation "Conferencing on the Edge: A Queer History of
Feminist Field Formation, 1969-1989" uses conferences to trace the intellectual and
infrastructural history of feminist and queer field formation in the 1970s and 1980s,
the two decades immediately following the institutionalization of the first women's
studies programs in U.S. colleges and universities. This project has been supported
by grants from Stony Brook's GSEU professional development award (2016), the Sallie
Bingham Center (2017), and the Schlesinger Library (2017). She's published articles
in feminist, LGBTQ, and archival journals such as
Feminist Formations,
The Journal of Lesbian Studies, and
the Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies, while her book reviews have appeared in journals such as
QED: A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking,
the Journal of Homosexuality,
the Sociological Review, and
Callaloo. In addition to her academic work, Rachel is on the coordinating committee of the
Lesbian Herstory Archives (LHA) in Brooklyn, New York. Founded in 1974, LHA houses
the oldest and largest historical lesbian collection in the world. At LHA, she is
specifically responsible for maintaining the more than four hundred collections of
personal papers and organizational records that comprise the archive's
special collections.
