Recycling Begins

1987

Stony Brook launched its first campus recycling program, marking an early commitment to waste reduction and environmental responsibility.

 

 Environmental Stewardship Office

2006

Created to lead energy conservation, carbon footprint reduction, recycling expansion, and sustainable campus operations.

 

Climate Commitment Signed

2007

Stony Brook pledged to pursue carbon neutrality by signing the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment.

 

Office of Sustainability Established

2011

Formalized campus sustainability leadership and expanded environmental programs, research integration, and student engagement.

 

Wolf Ride Bike Share

2011

Introduced to reduce vehicle use, promote healthier transportation, and lower campus emissions

 

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

2014

Installed to support cleaner transportation and encourage adoption of plug-in vehicles.

 

Fill It Forward Initiative

2018

Program launched to incentivize reusable water bottle use and reduce single-use plastic waste.

 

Energy Efficiency Recognition

2019-2022
