Important Updates on Mendelsohn Community Flooding

Subject: Important Updates on Mendelsohn Community Flooding

Dear Seawolves,

Overnight we experienced an unprecedented weather event in our area, which has caused serious damage to several buildings, including the residence halls that are part of the Mendelsohn Community.

Currently, Mendelsohn buildings have no power due to 4-6 feet of water in the basement, resulting in a power failure to the building.  At this time, it is unsafe to be in the building while our teams pump out the water, assess the damage, and determine the timeline for repairs.

We know that is a difficult situation, particularly given that you had to unexpectedly move from your residence hall in the overnight hours.  Our team is ready to support and help you, as we work together to make you as comfortable as possible.

Please note the important information below:

  • Access to Mendelsohn community residence halls is very limited given safety concerns.  Campus Residences staff will be allowing small groups to access essential belongings they need for the next 2-3 days.  Students should meet in East Side Dining to be escorted to their residence hall.
  • While classes are in session today, Mendelsohn residents are not required to attend class.  A note will be sent to faculty shortly letting them know that you are excused from class today (and tomorrow, if you decide to leave campus for the long holiday weekend.)
  • Depending upon the timeline of repairs, we may need to temporarily relocate you to another building on campus.  We will provide more information via email to you later today as we know more information.
  • If you live locally, and have the ability to go home through Labor Day weekend, we encourage you to do so.  Parents and family members may access the campus today and pick you up at the main entrance of the campus (at the administration circle) or other safe location.
  • If you have medication in your residence hall room that you use on a daily basis that is a medical necessity, please contact our Student Health Services pharmacist at (631) 632-6804 or (631) 632-6735. The pharmacist will discuss the medication with you and work with our team to access the medication needed.
  • While some buildings have sustained water damage, including the Stony Brook Union (which is closed due to water damage), there are several places you can go:  East Side Dining, West Side Dining, Recreation & Wellness Center, and the Student Activities Center.  East Side Dining, West Side Dining, and SAC are open for dining and take-out.

We encourage you to reach out to your family members to provide them with this update, including forwarding this email so that they are informed of the situation and the steps we are taking to ensure your health and safety.

We will continue to keep you updated with any developments. Please reach out to your Residence Hall Director if you have any questions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Sincerely,

Rick Gatteau, PhD
