ACTIVE SHOOTER

Since the tragic events at Virginia Tech and other schools and universities, many people have asked what they should do in the event of an "active shooter" incident on campus. These situations are unpredictable. However, there are a few steps that can be taken immediately to protect oneself.

Signs:

  • You may physically be in an active shooter situation
  • Become alert of a situation unfolding on campus through SB Alert or other means such as sirens

What to do:

  1. Call UPD and wait for the police to assist you out of the building
  2. Follow the basic protocol: RUN. HIDE. FIGHT.
  3. Take shelter in the nearest room, lock the doors and turn off lights
  4. Seek protective cover, stay away from doors and windows
  5. Wait for directions from UPD to ensure that the danger is over and it is safe to resume normal activities

Important to remember:

  • To better prepare yourself in the event of an active shooter incident watch the active shooter preparedness video
  • Sign up for the SB Alert Emergency to get timely notifications and updates about campus incidents
  • Ensure your Emergency Contact information is current in Solar
  • Take warning signs (written or verbal threats of gun violence) seriously and report concerns to UPD
