Biography:

In Trina's time at Stony Brook, they plan on studying computational psychology with a focus on trauma in adolescence and brain cognition in childhood development. In Trina's free time, they like to read, hang out with friends, play card games, and watch hockey (Go Devils!). Before becoming a Simons STEM Scholar, Trina participated in an internship at Saint Joseph's Carpenter Society under the Director of Accounting, studying data collection and analytics, identifying patterns in sets, and troubleshooting discrepancies when they arise.

Leading the Future:

"I see myself becoming a role model and someone others can turn to for solidarity and acceptance. I understand struggling with feeling isolated, believing that your experiences are singular. I want to combat that negativity by producing research on shared human experiences and by showing incoming STEM scholars that people like them have persevered, even with similar hardships."

Why did you become a Simons STEM Scholar?:

"This is a family. Through highs and lows, across different years and disciplines, those in the Simons program are there for each other. Finding footing in STEM research, and even in college, can be difficult, and seeing the true compassion and love the year above me had for each other and the support that they showed one another drew me in. I wanted to be part of something more—a family—and I found that in Simons."

What would you say to someone who is applying?:

"Be yourself and take the leap. It can be hard to throw yourself into an experience that is new and daunting, but Simons could be the best experience of your life if you simply go for it. Don't worry about the logistics or what "qualifications" you might not have. Be passionate and authentic, and that is truly where your character will shine through."
