Leading the Future:

"I would like my leadership to come in the form of being a mentor and being personable. My career goal is to be a physician-scientist. Whether I am leading projects and mentoring students as a PI in a lab or practicing as someone's physician, people would look up to me as an authority figure. Communication and collaboration are critical to excelling in both of those roles. Therefore, in my eyes, my leadership would come in the form of mentoring: excelling in my own practices, while also collaborating with and encouraging others to excel alongside and even beyond me in their career, research, or health. This, in my opinion, is what helps allow STEM to move forward. Working with others, amplifying our strengths and filling in for each other where we may not be as strong, is how I desire to lead."

Why did you become a Simons STEM Scholar?:

"As a person who had little experience in STEM but overwhelming passion, Simons felt like the perfect fit for me. It seemed like a program built for those who wanted to enter this exciting, innovative world but may not quite know how. The welcoming experience I had with admissions before entering the program made this world feel less intimidating. I chose to become a Scholar to become a part of that welcoming, collaborative community in STEM because it is necessary to include many points of view in a world that is becoming increasingly more diverse."

What would you say to someone who is applying?:

"Do it. Even if you might think it's a major or impossible feat to get in or accomplish the tasks at hand once you are in, do it. You may surprise yourself. I definitely did multiple times, and I keep surprising myself each day. If you really want to get somewhere, you will truly surprise yourself at the distance you will travel to get there."
