Awarding of the University Medal to Mr. Milton Glaser

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, Milton Glaser, a native of New York City, has achieved at the highest artistic and professional levels and been recognized as one of the world's leading graphic artists; and 

Whereas Mr. Glaser's logo, "I Love New York" was a gift to the people of New York City that became an international icon; and

Whereas Mr. Glaser has overseen the redesign of some of the nation's most influential publication, including The Washington Post, U.S. News and World Report; and

Whereas Mr. Glaser has been responsible for many of the most prominent graphic and decorative projects in New York City, including those at the World Trade Center and Rockefeller Center, and has completed other major design projects across the nation; and

Whereas Mr. Glaser's work has been acquired by major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institute, the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, and the Israel Museum; and

Whereas Mr. Glaser has been internationally honored by institutions and foundations including the Museum of Modern Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musée de l'Affiche, the Israel Museum, and the Royal Society of Arts, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Directors Club, and others; and

Whereas Mr. Glaser co-founded and designed  New York Magazine, a publication that has invigorated the life of the City for almost five decades; and

Whereas Mr. Glaser both participated in the production of, and designed, the publication Reinventing Undergraduate Education: A Blueprint for America's Research Universities, being the report of The Boyer Commission on Educating Undergraduates in the Research University, a document that changed the face of higher education across the world; and

Whereas, Mr. Glaser designed Stony Brook University's Memorial Arch to those lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001; and

Whereas, Mr. Glaser was instrumental in conceiving and founding the Stony Brook Center for Wine, Food, and Culture; serves on the Center's board; and designed the Center's logo; and

Whereas, Mr. Glaser, as design consultant, has transformed the corporate profile of Stony Brook University, giving new coherence to its published materials and new visibility to its initiatives; and

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Stony Brook Council expresses its deep appreciation to Milton Glaser for his outstanding and generous service to Stony Brook University, and hereby awards to him the University Medal, the highest form of recognition the institution can bestow on persons who have rendered services to the University.  In witness thereof.
