Resolution Authorizing the Re-naming of the Life Sciences Research Library the "Louis and Beatrice Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology"

WHEREAS, Drs. Henry and Marsha Laufer and their family have made exceptional personal and financial contributions to Stony Brook University for a period of more than forty years, and in that their personal commitment and extraordinary generosity supporting students, faculty, the library, Interdisciplinary research and the arts has major and broad ranging impact over many facets of the campus; and

WHEREAS,  Henry Laufer is a former Stony Brook faculty member with over 20 years of tenure, during which time he won the prestigious Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship and his work on complex variables and algebraic topology helped to distinguish the Mathematics Department; and

WHEREAS, Henry Laufer is a Trustee of the Stony Brook Foundation and board member of Stony Brook's Advanced Energy Research and Technology; and

WHEREAS, Marsha Laufer is a former 13-year research associate professor  in the School of Allied Health Professions who taught courses in research design and communication disorders and directed graduate student research; and

WHEREAS, Marsha Laufer's work in the arts and support of the Staller Center along with her guidance and advice as a founding member of The Friends of Staller Center Advisory Council, has had a defining impact on the Staller Center's success; and

WHEREAS, The Laufer's philanthropy has enabled Stony Brook University to establish the Louis and Beatrice Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology to bring together academic experts and students in math, genetics, biochemistry, engineering, and computer sciences to achieve breakthroughs in biomedical research and healthcare; and

WHEREAS, The goals of the Louis and Beatrice Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology include advancing the University's interdisciplinary and translational research in the 21st century, performing innovative research, developing new graduate training programs, hosting seminars and programs by internationally renowned scientists, and catalyzing collaborations among Stony Brook University, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK LOCAL COUNCIL, THAT:

In recognition of Henry and Marsha Laufer's uncommon leadership, deep commitment and generous philanthropy to Stony Brook University, the Stony Brook Local Council authorizes re-naming the Life Sciences Research Library the "Louis and Beatrice Laufer Center for Physical and Quantitative Biology," and furthermore,

The Stony Brook Local Council authorizes chair, Kevin Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
