Theme 2: Maximizing Exploration Opportunities

The next humans to set foot on the Moon will take on lofty goals and tight deadlines. To make the most of every moment on the lunar surface, the next generation of explorers will need the best tools and strategies the science community has to offer. RISE2 scientists field-test the geology gear that will empower future astronauts to succeed on the ground – wherever that ground may be.

Kilbourne Hole, a volcanic crater in New Mexico, is the RISE2 team’s testing area for interplanetary exploration techniques. Kilbourne Hole features explosive volcanic deposits. So does the Moon’s Taurus Littrow Valley, the site of the last crewed lunar landing. The similarities between these two landscapes allow the team to test modern equipment and mission Con Ops, or concepts of operations, under realistic conditions. Their work to improve hand-held geological tools and develop exploration strategies also advances scientific understanding of the Kilbourne Hole region.
