Expertise

Alfredo Fontanini received his medical degree (1998) and his PhD in Neuroscience (2003) from the University of Brescia Medical School, Italy. He performed his doctoral research in the Division of Biology at Caltech under the mentorship of Dr. James Bower - a pioneer of computational neuroscience. After postdoctoral fellowships in the departments of Biology, Psychology and Volen Center for Complex Systems at Brandeis University (2002-2008) under the supervision of Drs. Sacha Nelson and Don Katz, he joined the faculty of Stony Brook University (2008). From 2003-2005 he was a Sloan-Swartz Fellow for Theoretical Neurobiology at Brandeis. He is currently Professor and Chair in the Department Neurobiology & Behavior. He is a recipient of the Ajinomoto Award for Young Investigators in Gustation, Klingenstein Fellowship Award in the Neurosciences, and Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineer (PECASE). He is a member of the Society for Neuroscience and the Association for Chemoreception Sciences.

His research focuses on recording the activity of large numbers of neurons in behaving rodents (either with electrophysiological or optical methods) and understanding how circuits mediate sensory perception and taste-related behaviors.
