Bio: Dr. Alexander Orlov is a Professor of Materials Science and Chemical Engineering at State University of New York, Stony Brook, USA. He is also a faculty member of the Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Research, an affiliate faculty of the Chemistry Department and the Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University. Among his administrative responsibilities Dr. Orlov is serving as a co-Director of two Centers: Center for Laser Assisted Advanced Manufacturing and Center for Development and Validation of Scalable Methods for Sustainable Plastic Synthesis and Processing.

Research:Dr. Orlov's principle research and teaching activities are in the development of novel materials for energy generation, structural applications and environmental protection. The majority of his research focuses on synthesis of novel catalytic nanomaterials and tuning their properties for environmental and energy related applications. In the last 10 years his research was supported by 11 National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, the State of New York, the US Department of Education, the US Department of Transportation (via Regional Center), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Industry (totaling over $5.0 million as PI or co-PI).

Awards and Fellowships: Dr. Orlov was awarded the US National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the UK National Endowment for Science Technology and Arts CRUCIBLE award. He was also selected to the Fellowship of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry, the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Frontiers of Engineering (US), the EU-US (NAE) Frontiers of Engineering and was made Kavli Fellow in 2014 by the Kavli Foundation and the US National Academy of Sciences. In 2016 Dr. Orlov was named Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturer and was recognized by the State University of New York with Chancellor's Award of Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. In addition to research awards, Dr. Orlov has received several teaching awards, including 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) SEF Education Award, 2017 American Chemical Society Award for Incorporating Sustainability into Chemistry Education and 2015 NAE Frontiers of Engineering Education selection. His commercialization efforts have been recognized by the R&D 100 Award, often referred to as the "Oscar of Innovation". Prior to 2008 he was recipient of over 20 awards and fellowships from the University of Cambridge, University of Michigan, American Chemical Society and National Research Council among others.

Academic Background: Dr. Orlov has 5 degrees from various European and US institutions, including Doctoral and Master’s degrees in Physical and Environmental Chemistry from the University of Cambridge (UK) and Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Michigan (US). He also holds a Diploma in Economics from the London School of Economics and Management/Leadership Certificates from Harvard Business School. Before coming to Stony Brook Dr. Orlov was a Research Fellow in Chemistry and Engineering at the University of Cambridge (UK), where he was also affiliated with the King's College. From 2014 to 2020, he was a Visiting Professor of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge (UK) funded by the European Research Council (EU) and National Science Foundation (US). Dr. Orlov has extensive experience as a reviewer of grant proposals having submitted to fifteen programs at the National Science Foundation (US), the Department of Defense (US), the Department of Energy (US), the EU Commission and to more than 20 other funding/governmental agencies in Europe, Asia, Australia and North America. He serves on the editorial boards of Chemical Engineering Journal and Materials Letters. In addition, Dr. Orlov is Immediate Past Chair of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Research and New Technology Committee (RANTC), Second Vice-Chair of the AIChE Environmental Division, and Councilor of the American Chemical Society (ACS) Environmental Chemistry Division. He is also a member of the US-EU working group on Risk Assessment of Nanomaterials under auspices of the US White House and European Commission cooperative program on nanotechnology research.

Advisory positions and other activities: From 2007 till 2014 he was appointed by two UK Secretary of States for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to advice the Government on environmental issues such as hazardous substances and environmental impact of nanotechnology. He was a policy advisor on science, technology, engineering and innovation policy development to the UK Shadow Cabinet of the Rt Hon. David Cameron MP (now the UK Prime Minister) prior to 2010 General Election. Additionally, he has used his research experience to advise several US Congressmen, UK Members of Parliament, the EU Commission and various governments in Europe and Asia. Dr. Orlov is Founder and President of Corporation focused on sustainable nanomaterials and serves as advisor and advisory board member of several technology companies. Among his current activities, Dr. Orlov is contributing to work of the United Nations Environmental Program, being the lead author for the GEO report and reviewer of various reports, and to activities of the UK Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. Dr. Orlov's opinions, interviews and comments have been sought through numerous speaking engagements and quotes throughout international media including on Newsweek, BBC, Newsday, Nature, Daily Telegraph and Cambridge Evening News.
