Position Description

Stony Brook University (SBU), a premier institution within The State University of New York (SUNY), invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Graduate School. SBU is a comprehensive research-intensive university on Long Island. The University houses a teaching hospital and is co-manager of Brookhaven National Labs, making SBU one of only six universities in the nation that manages a federal laboratory. It is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), currently enrolling about 26,200 students (around 17,500 undergraduate and 8,700 graduate) and offering over 300 degree programs (baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and professional).

Recognizing the importance of and being responsive to the needs associated with the inherent diversity and international make-up of the student body, the Dean of the Graduate School maintains stewardship over and is a strong advocate for graduate students’ success and excellence, providing direction, support, and oversight for graduate and postdoctoral education. The Dean has primary responsibility for admission and records, program development and evaluation, and strategic leadership for graduate/postgraduate education locally and among our national and international peers. The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as a member of the University's senior leadership team, working collaboratively with the President, Provost, and other Deans to further SBU's mission to be among the best research universities worldwide. A successful Dean must work closely with directors of graduate studies and representatives of faculty and student governance across campus to improve graduate education at the University.

The Graduate School of SBU is committed to the highest standards of multi-disciplinary academic excellence, a diverse and productive academic community, and ethical conduct in research and scholarship. The Graduate School administers and supports 44 doctoral programs, serving 2,477 students, and more than 100 master's programs with over 4,572 students. SBU is among the leading public research universities in the Northeast, with a large and growing graduate population and a strong tradition of excellence in doctoral education across the Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Marine Sciences, as well as Biomedical and Health Sciences.

Required Qualifications: Doctorate from an accredited institution, preferably in a discipline offered by Stony Brook University's Graduate School. Applicants must have achieved tenure in a faculty position, served as an academic administrator, and have substantive and successful experience as a higher education administrator.  Proven track record of being actively involved in graduate education at a major research university.

Preferred Qualifications: Seven full-time years or equivalent of relevant administrative and managerial experience in long-range planning, resource allocation, and personnel development. Strong management skills, including stewardship of fiscal and human resources. Ability to work effectively with university senior leadership along with faculty and students in implementing an ambitious strategic plan. Commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students. Demonstrated aptitude with addressing concerns, specific to a diverse, international student community. Dynamic leadership, superior communication skills and a demonstrated dedication to student and faculty services are essential. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated record of innovation and accomplishment in graduate education at a major research university. It is expected that candidates can articulate and establish a clear, forward-thinking strategic vision in terms of re-defining and re-invigorating the role of graduate education in the 21st century.

This is a Management Confidential position. This is a full time appointment.  FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
