Seawolves Food Show Collaborates With Student Groups to Diversify Menu Options and Raise Money For Charity with Caribbean Cooking Competition

STONY BROOK, NY, April 2, 2015 – The Seawolves Food Show will host the first ever “Caribbean Cook-Off” on April 22 nd at 12:30 p.m. in the Student Activities Center (SAC) Ballroom A.

This event aims to broaden the diversity of food available on campus which is why the Seawolves Food Show has collaborated with the Latin American Student Organization (LASO), the Caribbean Student Organization (CSO), the Faculty Student Association (FSA), Campus Dining Services and the student team  “City Soul.”

The Caribbean cuisine theme was chosen by Seawolves Food Show producer Kareema Charles and reporter Briceyda Landaverde.  “The event began as a ‘Students Can Cook Challenge’ so that each year we could feature a different geographic region to develop original recipes to offer to the menu mix on campus,” stated Kareema Charles, Producer of the Seawolves Food Show.

Each team will consist of three students paired with a chef from Campus Dining’s culinary staff. “As part of the event planning, student teams will work with the culinary staff to test their recipes and cost them out so that their new cuisine can be featured on campus,” explained Briceyda Landaverde, Seawolves Food Show Reporter.

Guests will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to the event for $5.00 from any Campus Dining location starting April 6 th using cash, credit or meal points. Guests who purchase tickets will be able to sample each team’s entrée and dessert recipes and then vote for their favorites. The teams will also be judged by the Campus Dining executive chef, one faculty/staff member and two students who will critique the dishes based on appearance, flavor, use of ingredients, and originality.

All recipes featured in the cooking challenge will be added to the rotational menus at dining locations across campus. The winning team will receive $500 for an SBU charity of their choice, courtesy of FSA.

The Seawolves Food Show is a web show produced by The Faculty Student Association in collaboration with Stony Brook University journalism students which features information about Campus Dining’s programs, menu items and exciting events held throughout the year. The show also highlights nutrition tips, cooking demonstrations, and behind the scenes previews of new dining locations, renovations and improvements.
