Inaugural Civil Engineering Fellowships Awarded

Daniel

Lucas

We are delighted to announce the inaugural awardees of the Civil Engineering Gateway Fellowship and Research Experience Fellowship. These two fellowships are possible through generous support of local industry partners.

The goal of the Gateway Fellowship is to recruit outstanding graduates of the civil engineering undergraduate program to continue onto their M.S. degree in civil engineering at SBU by providing them with a financial award to defer their education cost, and the opportunity to engage in an internship with the industry partner before starting their graduate studies. The industry partner for the Gateway Fellowship is H2M Architects + Engineers. We are pleased to announce that the 2021 fellowship recipients are Daniel Ruiz and Lucas Annink. Daniel and Lucas will pursue their MS degrees under the guidance of Drs. Burgueño and Celli, respectively.

The Research Experience Fellowship increases opportunities for undergraduate civil engineering students to engage in full-time research during the summer period. In partnership with civil engineering faculty, the fellowship provides a stipend for the participating students. The industry partner for the Research Experience Fellowship is Posillico Inc. through the Posillico Foundation. The 2021 awardees are Ephraim Brisky and Abdelaziz Abdelmeged. Ephraim will be conducting research on coastal engineering with Dr. Farhadzadeh and Abdelaziz will work on research in structural engineering with Dr. Burgueño.

Research

The Gateway and Research Experience Fellowships are empowering mechanisms to train and recruit talented students to the civil engineering graduate program. We thank H2M and Posillico for their support; and we look forward to increasing partnerships with industry that support the mission and goals of civil engineering at Stony Brook, and the development of engineering talent on Long Island.
