Timeline of Events: ADA Compliance & Committee Actions

This timeline documents Stony Brook University's ongoing milestones and committee actions toward achieving digital accessibility and compliance.


2026

January 2026


  • January 12, 2026: OEA and CELT launch Mathpix to assist faculty in creating accessible STEM materials. 

2025

December 2025


  • December 15, 2025: OEA and DoIT launched GrackleDocs, an add-on to assist students, faculty, and staff in creating accessible docs, sheets, and Slides.
  • December 12, 2025: Approximately 40 high-profile university web pages have gone live using new, accessible templates.
  • December 4, 2025: Bi-Weekly ADA Advisory Board Meeting. The committee identified a "resource impasse," highlighting the gap between legal mandates and available budget/staff. A motion was passed to escalate the issue to the Cabinet, Provost, and Executive Vice President for determination of the institution's risk tolerance and compliance mandates. It was confirmed that the university aims to adhere to the "spirit of the mission" regarding the April 2026 deadline, acknowledging that achieving 100% compliance for an institution of this size is challenging. The institution is adhering to WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards. 1

 

September 2025


  • September 19, 2025: Deadline for final nominations for subcommittees.
  • September 11, 2025: ADA Advisory Board Meeting. Introduction of Jennifer Almquist (Chief of Staff) and Dylan Jones (Graduate Student Representative). The SUNY Office of General Counsel provided a history of web accessibility, emphasizing the shift from "accessible upon request" to "accessible from the start." MarCom presented the website compliance plan, noting that the design phase would last through February 2026, with content migration scheduled for February to April 2026. 

 

Summer 2025


  • June 30, 2025: ADA Advisory Board Agenda Date outlining the President's charge and the formation of subgroups. 

 

Spring 2025


  • May 16, 2025: Deadline for committee members to identify staff for inventory collection and subgroup nominations.
  • April 29, 2025: ADA Advisory Board Kickoff Meeting. President McCormick formally charged the reconstituted committee with addressing the new DOJ mandates.  [oals established included achieving an inventory of digital assets, establishing a timeline, forming subcommittees, and developing a communication strategy. The Board reviewed the updated Title II regulations requiring WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance, though New York State requires Level 2.2 compliance.

2024


  • September 2024: CELT onboards Lindsay Bryde as the Senior Course Content Accessibility Specialist.
  • June 24, 2024: Effective Date of New Rule. The DOJ rule regarding "Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability; Accessibility of Web Information and Services of State and Local Government Entities" officially became effective.
  • April 24, 2024: Federal Mandate Published. The Department of Justice updated Title II of the ADA, requiring all websites, digital documents, and mobile apps to be accessible, initiating a two-year compliance deadline for large public entities.
  • March 2024: EIT Accessibility and Cyber risk reviews migrated to TeamDynamix to improve workflow and experience for the campus community. 

2022 - 2023


  • May 2023: Marcomm onboards Todd Hayes as an accessibility web developer.
  • March 2023: MarComm launches Silktide, an accessibility auditing platform for the cms.
  • December 2022: OEA launched the EIT Accessibility Review Committee.  OEA and Doit launch the EIT Accessibility and cyber risk review for campus technology purchases.
  • April 2022: Stony Brook University Launches its Digital Accessibility Policy. 

1994


  • 1994: Establishment of the original President's ADA Advisory Committee, which played a key role in making the physical campus accessible.
