Materials Chemistry

Ongoing research in materials chemistry encompasses three main activities:

  1. Synthesis and design of novel materials.
  2. Understanding and applying materials function for practical uses.
  3. Exploiting advanced materials characterization to acquire mechanistic and structural insights.

We explore a wide range of material systems, including not only "soft" organic materials such as polymers, membranes, and gels but also "hard" inorganic solid-state materials in various crystalline, amorphous, and nanostructured formulations. These materials collectively find applications ranging from catalysis, energy storage, remediation, to biomedicine. Our research benefits from state-of-the-art instrumentation within our Department, on campus, and at the nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory.
