Fausto Ramirez
Professor of Chemistry
1958-1990
Organophosphorus Chemist
The 1958 appointment of Professor Ramirez, already an established organic chemist,
served notice of the intent of the nascent Stony Brook campus to take its place as
a major research university. Professor Ramirez was best known for his studies on displacement
reactions of phosphorus (V) compounds. He demonstrated how isomerization of stable
oxyphosphoranes could explain the stereochemistry of many reactions of phosphorus
compounds.
