Professor Helquist's broad interests encompassed organometallic chemistry, synthetic methods in organic chemistry, and synthesis of natural products as potential therapeutic agents. He initiated an advanced synthetic organic chemistry course at Stony Brook that he has taught at many universities, companies, government agencies, and conferences.
