Optically Detected Magnetic Resonance and Spectroscopic Studies of the lowest Excited Triplet States of Xanthone and Related Molecules in Crystalline Systems, The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 80, 2966 (1976).

Professor Hirota conducted  experiments using electron paramagnetic resonance and laser spectroscopy techniques to learn about radicals, ion-pairs in solution, the triplet states of molecules, and the structure and dynamics of excited states. He authored an 800+ page book, A History of Modern Chemistry
