Professor Bigeleisen did seminal research on the effect of isotopic substitution on chemical equilibria, kinetics, and reaction mechanisms. This work led to the widespread use of kinetic isotope effect analysis as a major research tool in organic chemistry, medicine, biochemistry, geochemistry, and meteorology.
