How to Apply to be a CBTP Trainee

WHY APPLY

To the Chemical Biology Training Program?

Before starting the application, PLEASE READ the following:

 

ELIGIBILITY:

1. Will have just completed your first or second year by June 1

2. Are in the Chemistry, BSB, Molecular Pharmacology, or Microbiology/Immunology graduate program

3. Have already taken (or plan to take) CHE541 (BSB520), CHE542, and CHE543

4. Are doing research at the chemistry-biology interface*

5. We welcome applications regardless of citizenship status. While our NIH funding can only be used to support US citizens and permanent residents, we have matching funds that can be used for partial support of students from any country.

*If your advisor is not already faculty in the CBTP program, please email CBTP@stonybrook.edu with your advisor's name and a brief description of your research before completing the application.

BE PREPARED TO UPLOAD a pdf with:

1. Research project title and abstract (1 paragraph) and description of current career goals (1 paragraph)

2. Unofficial SBU transcript including spring term grades

3. Table detailing mentor, institution, and total hours for any undergraduate research experience.**

4. Curriculum vitae including your education, any publications, and teaching and professional experience

** This is helpful information, but UG research experience is not a requirement.

 


AlSO REQUIRED:

  • In discussion with your advisor, decide on a potential co-advisor. No letter or commitment required at this time.
    • The co-advisor should be someone who can provide input on the more biological or more chemical side of your project, depending on the primary discipline of the advisor and project. This person will also serve on your thesis committee.

  • Request a letter of reference from your advisor to be sent directly to cbtp@stonybrook.edu before Friday, June 5, 2026.



IMPORTANT NOTE:

Please notify your advisor that if you are accepted to the program, they will be responsible for finding non-federal sources to cover the difference between the stipend allowed by the training grant (currently $29,364) and the stipend set by the student's graduate program.
The advisor will be asked for an appropriate account number upon a student’s acceptance.
