Profile

Phyllis Migdal, MD, MA joined the faculty at the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics in 2018. As a Clinical Associate Professor, she teaches in the Master’s program in the Center as well as in the Medicine in Contemporary Society (MCS) program in the Renaissance School of Medicine. As a member of the faculty in MCS she is a lecturer and small group co-facilitator with first year medical students. She also participates as a facilitator for Reflection Rounds with pediatric residents and medical students during their clerkship years. Dr. Migdal is a frequent guest lecturer with focus on health disparities, implicit bias, and medical ethics. With a strong interest in medical ethics, she is a member of the Institutional Ethics Committee and Consultation service. Her interests further include fostering compassionate care in physician training, the clinical practice of bioethical decision making, and health disparity and implicit bias in health and health care. Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Migdal practiced Clinical Endocrinology in the Stony Brook community after completing her medical school training, residency and fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1997 at Stony Brook University Hospital. While in private practice she also acted as a preceptor to medical students and residents from Stony Brook and facilitated group meetings and led educational workshops for Type I and Type II diabetics. She graduated with highest honor from New York University and more recently completed her Master’s in Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics at Stony Brook University.
