Southampton Building Demolitions

condemned buildings on southampton campus

Department

Campus Planning, Design & Construction (CPDC)

Overview

This project involves the demolition and removal of several long-vacant, deteriorated and condemned buildings at Stony Brook Southampton, including former residence halls, cottages, laboratories and other structures deemed unsuitable for rehabilitation.

Many of these structures were already in significant disrepair when Stony Brook University acquired the property. Demolition requires extensive planning, regulatory review and hazardous material abatement before work can begin. At the Montauk and Peconic buildings, hazardous material abatement began in September 2025. Following New York State approval, demolition activities began in summer 2026.

The removal of these structures will create a safer, more functional campus environment while opening opportunities for the future use and development of underutilized campus space.

Key Highlights

  • Demolition and removal of condemned and deteriorated campus structures, including former residential, academic and support facilities.
  • Completed demolitions: Business Center and Peconic 400, 500 and 600.
  • Ongoing demolitions:  Queen Anne; Montauk 100, 200, 300.
  • Upcoming demolitions: Montauk 400, 500 and 600; Children's School; Psych A.
  • Coordination of demolition activities following extensive review and New York State approval.
  • Preparation of underutilized campus areas for potential future improvements and development.

Impact

The removal of these deteriorated structures represents an important step in the ongoing revitalization of Stony Brook Southampton. By addressing longstanding safety and infrastructure concerns, the project will improve campus conditions and create opportunities to reimagine underutilized spaces. These improvements will provide greater flexibility for future investments in facilities, outdoor spaces and amenities that support the evolving needs of the University community.
