Department

Overview
The Fine Arts ADA Access Upgrade project improves accessibility and safety at the main entrance to the Fine Arts building at the Stony Brook Southampton campus. The work includes demolition of the existing access ramp, asphalt walkways, red brick walkways, brick steps, handrails, and landing, followed by installation of stamped concrete, re-graded ramps, new solid steps, and new handrails. The project also adds a new paved path from the ramp to provide easier access to the Library. Together, these upgrades bring the exterior approach up to current ADA standards while enhancing the appearance of a highly visible campus entrance.

Key Highlights

  • Removed aging brick and asphalt walkways, steps, ramps, and landing

  • Installed new stamped concrete at former brick locations to improve aesthetics and durability

  • Re-pitched and reconstructed access ramps to meet current ADA code

  • Poured new solid steps and installed ADA-compliant handrails

  • Added a new paved path to provide more direct and accessible access to the Library

Impact
The upgraded entrance will provide safer, more accessible routes for staff, students, and community members who rely on ADA-compliant access to the Fine Arts building.

This project, like all public-facing work at Southampton, reinforces Stony Brook University’s commitment to this campus. By investing in a building that was underutilized for many years and is now a centerpiece of the Strategic Initiatives organization, SBU is signaling long-term support and engagement with the surrounding community.
