Getting Around & Campus Experience Investments

The Facilities Master Plan enhances how people move through and experience campus at Stony Brook through improved circulation, expanded mobility options, and strategic investments in open space. These efforts focus on strengthening connections, improving safety and accessibility, and creating a more cohesive, vibrant campus environment.

 

As campus activity continues to grow, the Facilities Master Plan introduces a coordinated approach to improve circulation, accessibility, and the overall campus experience. By aligning mobility enhancements with investments in open space, the plan creates a more connected, efficient, and user-friendly environment.

  • New roadway connections to improve circulation and reduce congestion
  • Establishment of pedestrian-focused zones along key campus corridors
  • Enhanced bus service and route adjustments to better serve campus destinations
  • Expansion of bicycle infrastructure and amenities
  • Improved pedestrian crossings and shared-use paths across campus
  • Strengthened connections between Main Campus, the Health Sciences Center, and the Research & Development Park

The plan identifies targeted improvements across campus to enhance usability, accessibility, and the overall experience of key outdoor spaces.

  1. North Quad: creation of a large, flexible gathering space
  2. Staller Steps: improved ADA accessibility and circulation
  3. SAC to Roth Pond connection: enhanced pedestrian linkage and drainage improvements
  4. New Engineering Quad: addition of a new plaza supporting adjacent academic buildings
  5. ESS Plaza: accessibility improvements while preserving existing landscape features
  6. West Toll Drive and Gym Road: extension of pedestrian-focused corridors
  7. Life Sciences Plaza: enhanced green space and usability
  8. HSC Plaza: improved roof deck with expanded green space
  9. Health Sciences Drive Pond: expanded capacity and recreational opportunities

The plan builds on a comprehensive landscape framework to create a more cohesive and vibrant campus environment. A series of interconnected open spaces and pathways will strengthen connections between academic, residential, and natural areas.

  • Creation of a north–south collaboration spine connecting key campus destinations
  • Development of new and enhanced quads, plazas, and open gathering spaces
  • Strengthened east–west connections across campus
  • Improved access to major landmarks, including Roth Pond and the Ashley Schiff Preserve
  • Integration of courtyards, green space, and outdoor study areas
  • Expanded opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and community use
