I came to Stony Brook knowing I loved to write but not yet understanding what it meant to take that love seriously. The BFA in Creative Writing pushed me to treat my work as both art and craft. Through workshops and close mentorship with professors, I learned to revise with intention and to trust my voice even when it felt vulnerable. That foundation shapes everything I do now. Whether I’m working on fiction or navigating professional spaces that demand clarity and empathy, I carry what the program gave me: discipline and confidence in my voice. If writing is how you make sense of the world, this major will give you the space and support to grow into it.

The BFA in Creative Writing is one of Stony Brook's most wonderful treasures! In such a large school, the Creative Writing program fostered a familial and artistic environment for those both within and outside of the department through readings, clubs, and events. The mentorships and friendships I formed during my time in the BFA continue to be cherished and invaluable to me after graduation. It was these mentors and peers who encouraged me to pursue an MFA in Creative Writing, and who supported me endlessly throughout the entire process. As a current MFA student at UC Davis, I am forever grateful for the experiences and relationships I gained from the Creative Writing program at Stony Brook.
