All Stony Brook students must complete General Education requirements by completing the Stony Brook Curriculum (SBC). Students are responsible for completing the general education requirements published in the bulletin or catalog that was current as of the first semester of matriculation (or rematriculation).

The Stony Brook Curriculum includes both breadth and depth of study, and ensures that students will learn skills necessary for life-long learning. Through the general education curriculum, students will Demonstrate Versatility, Explore Interconnectedness, Pursue Deeper Understanding, and Prepare for Lifelong Learning through 18 SBC attributes.

  • CEAS majors are exempt from completing the LANG category.
A detailed list of the courses and activities that fulfill these objectives may be found in the university undergraduate Catalog. Many of the above requirements may be fulfilled as part of a student’s major or minor.
  • CEAS students are encouraged to speak with the CEAS advising team to review their progress of general education and major requirements.
For more information about the Stony Brook Curriculum, the SBC attributes, and additional notes regarding the general education requirements can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Students can use the GPA calculator to predict the GPA of a current or future semester by entering the predictive GPA of each course or semester.

Access the Future and Current GPA calculators here, and learn more about how to use these tools.

First time takers of courses have priority in registration. Students who wish to retake a course (second attempt) may begin retake registration per the date notated on the Registrar’s Office academic calendar, pending an open seat.

Students are considered to have taken a course if they remain in the course past the add/drop deadline, regardless of the grade received in the course.

Credits for retaken courses will count once toward cumulative credits, but will count each time toward semester load. The highest grade of all attempts at the course will count towards the GPA. All graded attempts will be listed on the student’s transcript.

More information on the university retake policy and multiple registrations for the same course can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Students who wish to take a course more than twice must receive approval from the academic department offering the course and CEAS Committee on Academic Standing and Appeals. These requests must be submitted the Retake/Late Add Request Form. In support of this petition form, students must include documentation from either the course instructor or department.

  • Note: WAE 190, WAE 192, WAE 194, WRT 101, & WRT 102 are exempt from the petition process.
Approved petitions for CEAS students to take a course for the third or more time are communicated directly with the Registrar’s Office for processing.
  • Students are responsible to pay any fees associated with the processing of their petition.

More information on multiple registrations for the same course can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.
