The President's Volunteer Service Award
Fall 2007
Stony Brook University is now certified to bestow the President's Volunteer Service Award to any and all students, faculty, and staff deserving of recognition for volunteer work. The President's Volunteer Service Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard, measured by the number of hours served over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime. Students and staff may wish to (though it is not required) take advantage of the free tracking system in order to keep track of volunteer hours. Click here to track service hours. If you know a student, student group, or member of faculty whom you would like to recognize, please contact Urszula Zalewski at Urszula.Zalewski@stonybrook.edu or (631) 632-6814.
Stony Brook VISTA Program

The VISTA Program, new this year to Stony Brook, will work with many departments to increase
community service and service-learning opportunities so that the University may better serve the
surrounding communities of Long Island and New York City. For the 07/08 academic year, the VISTA
Program will focus on increasing student engagement off campus in mentoring activities throughout the region.
Community service efforts will be enhanced on campus through a variety of on-campus service projects
designed and supported by the VISTA Program. The program is open to students of all majors! If interested, contact Rachel Levy, VISTA Program Coordinator at Rachel.Levy@stonybrook.edu or (631) 632-6812. Thanks!
Americorps Education Award Program
September 2007
The Corporation for National and Community Service has approved Stony Brook’s Americorps Education Award Program for another three-year cycle starting this fall of ’07. Through this program, $50,000 is available for 50 students in the form of tuition vouchers upon completion of 300 service hours/year. In addition to receiving academic financial support, AmeriCorps members learn new skills, acquire leadership experiences, and gain a sense of satisfaction from positively impacting the lives of others. Participants address community needs in the following areas: education, public safety, human services, volunteer generation, and the environment. Members serve by performing tasks such as tutoring and mentoring youth of all ages, conducting literacy campaigns, working on environmental projects, leading community health campaigns, and responding to natural disasters by providing emergency relief for victims. To date AmeriCorps members have contributed over 50,561 hours to bettering their community and will continue to do so each year the program is renewed.
For those who are interested in the program, please follow the link to complete the application and submit it to the Career Center by September 20, 2007. Thank you!
