Stony Brook University is committed to recognizing and rewarding our students' excellence in all areas of learning and research. We offer a variety of scholarships to new and continuing students, some of which are based on merit alone and others which take into account special talents, leadership and community service or financial need.

Many of our academic departments have scholarships and monetary awards for students majoring in their discipline. Please contact your academic department to inquire about the availability of departmental scholarships that may not be listed on this website. Recipients chosen by the department are generally continuing students who have outstanding academic records in a particular field or endeavor.
Because student financial need is sometimes an eligibility requirement or consideration we encourage you to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible in January of the year preceding your fall enrollment. If you have demonstrated financial need, any offered scholarship will be part of the complete financial aid package up to the budgeted cost of attendance. Scholarships can be applied to the cost of a Stony Brook education and need not be used for tuition only.
It is important for the reader to know that one cannot generalize from one academic institution to another regarding policy and/or procedures with relation to scholarships. Even within the SUNY system there are differences among the campuses regarding scholarship requirements, policies, and procedures. Always check directly with the school of interest to get the most accurate, up-to-date information.
