From the Director…
Welcome to the China Studies Program at SUNY-Stony Brook! Our program is dedicated to the study of China, both as a vital part of the world today and as one of the great civilizations in human history. To this end, we offer courses ranging from language to literature, history, religion, comparative studies, anthropology, philosophy, sociology, and other areas. We seek to foster in our students an appreciation of the rich heritages of China’s past as well as of the complexities of China’s present. We also strive to complement the disciplinary study of China in other departments of the humanities, social sciences and professional schools.
For some students the study of China will provide a unique and attractive addition to a liberal arts education. For some it will present an opportunity to establish or restore connections to their ancestral heritage. For some it may lead to graduate studies and subsequently a career in teaching and research. And for many others it will be the beginning of a professional career (e.g., business, international trade, government services, communications, law, engineering, or medicine) of which China remains an integral component.
Our program was founded by the late Professor Shi Ming Hu over thirty years ago. In the last few years, with the newly established Department of Asian & Asian American Studies at Stony Brook University, it has undergone considerable changes in terms of its overall curriculum as well as its faculty. According to Chinese wisdom, 三十而立, by age thirty, one should find his/her niche in the world. Our program takes pride in refining and redefining its role and renewing itself in a world of rapid and drastic changes. Whatever your background and whatever your career objectives, we hope you will find the experience at the China Studies Program to be intellectually rewarding and humanly enriching.
