Educational Opportunity Program/Advancement on Individual Merit (EOP/AIM)

EOP/AIM provides academic support and financial aid to New York State residents who show promise for mastering college-level work, but who may otherwise not be admitted.

Each EOP/AIM student is assigned to a professional counselor who provides academic advising and encourages academic achievement. Entering freshmen admitted through EOP/AIM are required to attend an intensive summer program designed to enhance academic skills and better prepare them for the rigorous academic atmosphere that they will be entering.

All EOP/AIM freshmen are required during their first year to enroll in either AIM 102 Expository Writing or AIM 104 Literary Analysis and Critical Reasoning, as determined by their writing placement score. Tutorial assistance in academic subjects is provided for EOP/AIM students, who are encouraged to use all academic support services available through the program or other University offices.

Eligibility

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• A New York State resident for 12 months prior to enrollment.
• Ineligible for admission under traditional standards, but demonstrate potential for completing a college program; and
• In need of financial assistance within legislated income guidelines. In selecting students for the program, priority is given to applicants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. If in the year prior to enrollment your family income falls within EOP guidelines due to unemployment, separation, divorce or death of a parent, etc., you may still not qualify for EOP if you are not from a historically disadvantaged background.
• Be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident.
• Have received a New York State high school diploma or its equivalent.
• Meet the Economic Eligibility Requirements described on the EOP/AIM website.

Freshman Academic Guidelines
Eligible students will have completed three years of high school science and three years of sequential math. Admitted students typically have at least: an ACT score of 19 or an SAT math/critical reading score of 900 (with a minimum of 450 in both critical reading and math), and a GPA of 80 or B. As part of the EOP admission process, your high school record and test scores will be reviewed, as well as information about clubs, hobbies, jobs and any other experiences which made an impact on your education. This information will help college counselors evaluate your potential for success in a college program.

Transfer Academic Guidelines
A 2.5 grade point average AND a minimum of 18-24 academic credits at another accredited institution. Transfer students are eligible for admission provided they have been enrolled in EOP, College Discovery, HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program), SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge) or a similar academic and financial support program at their previous college. Transfer students with more than 56 credits must indicate a major on their application.

Applying

Applications for EOP/AIM are accepted for the fall semester only. Offered to full-time students, EOP/AIM accepts students who qualify both academically and financially for the program. In selecting students for the program, priority to given to applicants from historically disadvantaged backgrounds. Applicants are encouraged to apply early, as there is limited space in the program.

Fee Waiver

Both freshman and transfer applicants to EOP may qualify for an application fee waiver. If the applicant is found to be ineligible for academic or financial reasons, the applicant will be billed for the fee.
