Solar Trash Compactor RecyclingSustainable Practices

The Solar Compactor is a patented compacting trash receptacle that is completely self-powered. Instead of requiring a grid connection, a solar compactor uses solar power for 100% of its energy needs. The unit takes up only as much space as the footprint of an ordinary trash receptacle, but its capacity is five times greater. The solar compactor is both energy efficient and saves on labor costs. There are currently 4 units on campus. They can be found in the following locations:

  • Student Activities Center
  • Javits Lecture Center
  • Staller Center for the Arts
  • Stony Brook Union
