Dear Seawolves,

Spring is here, and with warmer weather comes more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and gather for social activities with friends and peers. We love seeing our community outdoors, and to keep it safe and fun for everyone, please do your part to help maintain a respectful, healthy, and clean environment:

Take care of our beautiful campus.

  • Whatever you bring to a space, take it with you when you leave. This includes removing trash, fliers/signage, equipment, supplies, etc. to ensure the space is returned properly for others to use.

Minimize noise and use amplified sound only in approved outdoor locations.

  • Classes are still in session and faculty and staff are working in offices, so please be mindful of how your activities may affect those around you.

  • Amplified sound is generally allowed in certain designated outdoor areas on campus such as the SAC Plaza, the Union patio, the Academic Mall, and other locations approved by the Office of Student Life. Sound must stay below the 90 dB from 10 feet from the speaker(s). All amplified sound must end by 10 pm.

  • If professional staff or other members of our community ask you to lower the volume of music or any sound, or stop amplified sound altogether if it’s not in an approved outdoor location or interferes with campus operations, please respect and comply with this request.

Stony Brook is a 100% smoke-free campus.

  • Smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on campus, indoors or outdoors, including green spaces and parking lots.

  • The use, possession, cultivation, and sale of marijuana is prohibited under federal requirements and the University's Code of Student Responsibility, and is subject to disciplinary action.

  • If professional staff or other members of our community observe these policies being violated and ask you to stop the behavior, please respect and comply with this request.

Policy violations may be referred for follow-up through our conduct process. Activities connected to a student organization may be subject to our Student Organization Conduct Process. In addition, individual student referrals may also be made to Student Conduct and Community Standards.

We appreciate you being mindful of these expectations so that our campus remains a welcoming, respectful, and enjoyable place for all. Let’s have a great time together and enjoy the upcoming outdoor events and traditions!

Sincerely,
