Noah Perez (BA, 2024)

After graduating from Stony Brook University in 2024 with a degree in Sustainability Studies, Noah Perez began his career with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) as a seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician in the Freshwater Fisheries Unit. During this time, Noah conducted electrofishing surveys to study freshwater fish populations across Long Island. He also participated in the I FISH NY outreach program, helping introduce the public to fishing while educating them about freshwater fish and their ecosystems.
Noah continues his career with NYSDEC today as an Environmental Program Specialist in the Division of Materials Management. His current position involves inspecting solid waste management facilities, reviewing permit and registration applications/renewals, and making sure facilities comply with New York State environmental regulations. His work also involves tackling potential violations and working with facility operators to resolve environmental compliance issues.
One of the highlights of Noah's undergraduate experience at SoMAS was the opportunity to explore sustainability from many different perspectives. The Sustainability Studies program provided him with a greater understanding of environmental issues and how different aspects of sustainability are connected. Through group projects, classroom discussions, and research opportunities, Noah developed valuable skills in solving problems, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork. For his honors research, Noah studied the effects of polyvinyl alcohol contamination on freshwater planaria, examining how exposure affected their survival, growth, and regeneration.
Noah credits the Sustainability Studies program with teaching him the importance of approaching environmental problems from different angles and identifying the value of working with people who bring different knowledge and expertise. In his current position, Noah specializes in comprehending and implementing environmental regulations, while others may have expertise in areas outside his own. Being able to communicate, collaborate, and bring these different perspectives together to work toward a common goal is something he considers especially valuable from his time at SoMAS.
Outside the classroom, Noah was actively involved in the Stony Brook Ski and Snowboard Club, serving as the transportation coordinator and interim vice president. Through the club, he was able to share his passion for snowboarding, organize trips, and develop lasting friendships among fellow students!
Noah is currently pursuing a master's degree in Environmental Engineering Sciences at the University of Florida, where he hopes to further his knowledge of environmental systems and sustainable infrastructure.
