UNIVERSITY IN THE NATION
FOR DIVERSITY AND
GLOBALIZATION — QS U.S. University Rankings
SBU cultivates a supportive environment that
welcomes all students through programs
aimed at ensuring their success, such as
the Educational Opportunity Program/
Advancement on Individual Merit. SBU’s
commitment to those who are economically
disadvantaged, coupled with a dedication
to leading-edge academic programs and
innovative mentoring opportunities, creates
a strong interdisciplinary environment that
builds student success. The university ranks
second among all AAU institutions for its
share of Pell grant recipients — one out of
three SBU undergraduates — and it is the
only public university in the AAU in which Pell
grant recipients graduate at the same rate as
those who do not receive Pell grants. Its Pell
grant recipients earn higher wages after they
graduate, compared with those who did not
receive Pell grants.
SBU continues to introduce initiatives that
provide upward mobility for economically
disadvantaged students. With a $56.6 million
gift from the Simons Foundation, SBU has
launched the Stony Brook Simons STEM
Scholars Program, set to debut in Fall 2023.
The program’s goal: increase diversity in
STEM fi elds by helping train the next
generation of STEM leaders. Six out of 10
SBU Pell grant recipients earn a degree in
STEM or health fi elds.
