EXPENDITURES SBU’s emergence as a world-class research
institution enables it to tackle some of the
world’s most pressing issues. An R1 research
institution — the highest research designation
in the United States — SBU co-manages
Brookhaven National Laboratory with which
it shares nearly 100 joint appointments, and
also enjoys a close working relationship with
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
SBU’s state-of-the-art facilities are integral
to its research endeavors. They include
the Institute for Advanced Computational
Sciences, which expands the intellectual
foundations of computation and data for
high-impact applications in engineering and
the physical, environmental, life sciences
and the humanities; the Simons Center
for Geometry and Physics, which furthers
fundamental knowledge in geometry and
theoretical physics; and the Advanced Energy
Research and Technology Center, which
develops technologies to enable clean
energy. Upcoming projects include a new
engineering building, which will serve as the
intellectual hub to enable a technology-driven
future, and the Institute for Engineering-
Driven Medicine, which explores the
convergence of engineering and medicine
to transform healthcare.
