STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY IS MAKING A POSITIVE
IMPACT ON THE REGION, THE NATION AND THE
WORLD: Its 65-year history has been marked by
substantial transformation and momentum. Today
it is recognized as a foremost center of learning and
scholarship, fulfi lling the mandate given by the State
Board of Regents in 1960 to become a university that
would “stand with the fi nest in the country.”
SBU’s Main Campus encompasses nearly 1,040 acres,
and the university has a campus in Southampton, New
York; affi liated locations in Manhattan; a partnership
with the State University of New York in Korea; and has
the responsibility of co-managing Brookhaven National
Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy — one of
only eight universities with a role in running a national
laboratory. SBU’s undergraduate and graduate student
population of more than 25,000 hails from more than 100
countries and all 50 states.
In teaching and learning, in connecting with business and
the economy, and in expanding leading-edge healthcare
services, Stony Brook has set the standard as a far-
reaching center of academic excellence that is
changing the world.
