Recommended Naming Resolution: Drs. Jack Zhang and Mary Luo Endowed Fund for Excellence; and the Drs. Zhang and Luo Plaza
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Stony Brook Council endorses the naming of the endowed fund the Drs. Jack Zhang and Mary Luo Endowed Fund for Excellence for the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the plaza adjacent to the Physics Building as the Drs. Zhang and Luo Plaza.
BACKGROUND
WHEREAS, Dr. Jack Yongfeng Zhang, a distinguished alumnus of Stony Brook University, earned his PhD in chemistry in 1987 and together with his wife, Dr. Mary Luo, they co-founded Amphastar Pharmaceuticals in 1996;
WHEREAS, their shared commitment to advancing science and discovery reflects a lifelong dedication to innovation, research, and global impact;
WHEREAS, to honor the legacy of their esteemed friend Dr. C.N.Yang, Drs. Zhang and Luo seek to permanently secure the global distinction of the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics;
WHEREAS, their generous commitment of $12,000,000 will create the Drs. Jack Zhang and Mary Luo Endowed Fund for Excellence for the C.N.Yang Institute of Theoretical Physics, providing permanent, flexible resources to support faculty, students, and pioneering research;
WHEREAS, their outstanding philanthropy will also be recognized through the naming of the plaza directly adjacent to the Physics Building as the Drs. Zhang and Luo Plaza;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK COUNCIL, THAT:
In recognition of the extraordinary generosity of Drs. Jack Zhang and Mary Luo, and their deep connection to Stony Brook University, the Stony Brook Council endorses the naming of the endowed fund as the Drs. Jack Zhang and Mary Luo Endowed Fund for Excellence for the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the plaza adjacent to the Physics Building as the Drs. Zhang and Luo Plaza.
The Stony Brook Local Council authorizes Chair, Kevin Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
