Resolution Authorizing the Naming of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, the "Renaissance School of Medicine"
WHEREAS, For 35 years, Renaissance Technologies and Stony Brook University, premiere Long Island institutions who share a mission of excellence, have been linked by much more than close proximity; and
WHEREAS, Since 1982, Renaissance Technologies current and former employees, have been extraordinary supporters of Stony Brook University and its noble mission and these current and former employees -engaged, compassionate and committed community members -have been exceptionally involved in the growth of Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine; and
WHEREAS, To date, 110 Renaissance Technologies current and former employees have committed
more than $500 million including documented pledges of almost $79 million, to benefit
the entire University community and surrounding region. These philanthropic investments,
accelerated during the Campaign for Stony Brook, have advanced strategic objectives
of the University, enhancing and substantially strengthening the level of programs,
research, teaching and patient care across the entire campus; and
WHEREAS, The mission of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine -to educate a diverse group of physicians and biomedical investigators to deliver top-of class -compassionate clinical care and advance medical science through relentless inquiry into cutting edge diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic tools -mirrors the interests of many of the current and former Renaissance Technologies employees as demonstrated through their generous investments and echoes the firm's commitment to excellence in its research and performance outcomes;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK LOCAL COUNCIL, THAT:
In recognition of the uncommon leadership, deep commitment and continuing generous philanthropy of the current and former Renaissance Technologies employees to Stony Brook University, the Stony Brook Local Council authorizes re-naming the School of Medicine the "Renaissance School of Medicine," and furthermore,
The Stony Brook University Council authorizes chair, Kevin Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
