Resolution honoring Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Knapp Professor and Knapp Chair, Department of Pediatrics; Dean for Clinical Affairs, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University; and Vice President, Health System Clinical Programs and Strategy for Stony Brook Medicine, with the University Medal for exemplary leadership and service. 

 

WHEREAS, the staff and faculty of Stony Brook Medicine has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with incredible heroism, innovation, creativity and teamwork under the focused dedication, expert leadership and unwavering determination of Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Vice President, Health System Clinical Programs and Strategy for Stony Brook Medicine; and 

WHEREAS, under Dr. McGovern’s resolute guidance and expertise, the Stony Brook Medicine healthcare system collaborated successfully to manage patients at its four hospitals and across the entire continuum of ambulatory care settings, to make sure COVID-19 patients received the appropriate level of care in the right place at the right time; and 

WHEREAS, Stony Brook Medicine dramatically expanded telehealth services for outpatients and offered innovative technological solutions at the bedside to connect inpatients with their loved ones during restricted visitation policies; and 

WHEREAS, Stony Brook Medicine helped establish a drive-through coronavirus testing site on Stony Brook University’s campus in conjunction with the New York State Department of Health to test thousands of Long Island residents for coronavirus; and  WHEREAS, Stony Brook Medicine continuously developed creative and innovative approaches to solve problems and support its staff, including new training programs and buddy programs, creation of the Respite Room, Team Lavender and the Hope Report; and 

WHEREAS, Dr. McGovern’s use of multi-disciplinary teams who were inspired to clear every obstacle to solve the problems that were presented each day allowed Stony Brook Medicine to form the backbone of the overall response to COVID-19 across Suffolk County; and 

WHEREAS, Stony Brook Medicine is now leading efforts to immunize its staff and faculty and assist the State of New York in vaccinating Long Island residents through various public COVID-19 vaccination sites; and  WHEREAS, Dr. McGovern is the kind of leader who inspires greatness in others, motivates the team to tackle the almost impossible, and always has the greater good at front of mind; 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK COUNCIL, THAT: 

The Stony Brook Council unanimously agrees to bestow upon Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Knapp Professor and Knapp Chair, Department of Pediatrics; Dean for Clinical Affairs, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University; and Vice President, Health System Clinical Programs and Strategy for Stony Brook Medicine, the Stony Brook Council University Medal in tribute and in gratitude for her leadership and public service. Dr. McGovern has served the common good, and is hereby recognized for her exceptional achievements on behalf of Stony Brook University; Stony Brook Medicine; and our patients, faculty and staff, and furthermore, 

The Stony Brook Council authorizes chair, Kevin Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
