Resolution Honoring New York State Assembly Member Steve Englebright with the University Medal 

 

WHEREAS, Throughout his career, New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright has been a champion for higher education and the environment. A geologist by training, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in 1969 and a Master of Science in Geology (Paleontology/Sedimentology) from Stony Brook University in 1975; and 

WHEREAS, In addition to being an alumnus, Assemblyman Englebright has also been a contributing' member of the Stony Brook. University faculty since the 1970s. He has been the curator of Geology and has taught numerous courses including the Natural History of Long Island; and 

WHEREAS, Assemblyman Englebright sought to pursue elective office in order to bridge the gap between technical concepts, science and policy. He was first elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in 1983, where he served until joining the New York State Assembly in 1992. As the State Assemblyman for the 4th Assembly District, Assemblyman Englebright has represented Stony Brook University, Stony Brook Medicine, and the Long Island State Veterans' Home throughout his entire tenure in the State Legislature; and 

WHEREAS, One of his earliest accomplishments was leading the efforts to preserve the Long Island Pine Barrens. Assemblyman Englebright is credited with articulating the connection between the preservation of the Pine Barrens ecosystem and protection of the sole source aquifer which it overlays as a public health imperative; and 

WHEREAS, Through his leadership in the Assembly Majority Conference and his passion for the environment, Assemblyman Englebright was selected to be the Chairman of the Assembly Environinental Conservation Committee in 2015. As Chairman of the Environment Conservation Committee, Assemblyman Englebright was at the forefront of every major environmental policy initiative in the State, including record investment in the Environmental Protection Fund, the creation of the nation-leading Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and countless initiatives related to renewable energies, consumer safety, sustainability, and water quality protection. Assemblyman Englebright has also been instrumental in policies to protect and promote open space preservation; and 

WHEREAS, Assemblyman Englebright worked closely with presidents John _H. Marburger Ill, Shirley Strum Kenney, Samuel L. Stanley, Jr., and Maurie Mcinnis, to make sure that the campus was provided the necessary and available tools that have enabled Stony Brook University to become one of the State's Flagship Universities and for Stony Brook Medicine to provide the best in medical research and patient care all across Long Island; and 

WHEREAS; Support he provided to the University, included nearly $5 million towards helping Stony Brook Cancer Center fo be designated a National Cancer Institute by the National Institute of Health; funding to rehabilitate the Student Health Center; legislation designating Flax Pond a Tidal Wetland Sanctuary; and millions of dollars of support for the New York State Center for Clean Water Technology, that facilitated the development of innovative and effective strategies to protect Long Island's. water; and 

WHEREAS, Assemblyman Englebright's efforts and successes on behalf of Stony Brook University go FAR BEYOND the list of accomplishments noted above that enhanced the lives of cmmtless students and patients who llave benefited from the highest quality education .and the best healtµ care on Long Island; 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE STONY BROOK COUNCIL, THAT: 

The Stony Brook University Council unanimously agrees to bestow upon New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright, the Stony Brook Council University Medal in tribute and in gratitude.for his leadership and public service. Assemblyman Englebright has served the common good, and is hereby recognized for his exceptional achievements on behalf of Stony Brook University and furthermore, 

The Stony Brook University Council authorizes chair, Kevin Law, to transmit this resolution to the Board of Trustees of the State University of New York.
