Proposal Development

Advancing faculty research through strategic proposal development and funding support

Proposal Development

Proposal Development (OPD) promotes the advancement of university initiatives by supporting the development and preparation of highly competitive grant proposals. OPD is committed to providing Stony Brook's research community with a comprehensive suite of services to foster the development and growth of research activities. In addition to proposal management, our support services include identifying extramural funding opportunities, coordinating limited submission competitions, nurturing research collaborations, and connecting researchers to institutional resources. We also organize workshops and trainings in grantsmanship, coordinate external copy editing and graphic design services, serve as project managers for the proposal development process, handle the administrative requirements and manage a repository of sample grant proposal materials. Our team’s forward-thinking approach to research development provides faculty with tactical support for large-scale proposals, ensuring that they are aligned with sponsor funding priorities.

Request for Information (RFI): Opportunities to Reduce Administrative Burden in NIH Extramurla Research

The NIH has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on Opportunities to Reduce Administrative Burden in NIH Extramural Research. With this RFI, NIH seeks specific, actionable recommendations for making the life cycle of the NIH grants process more efficient and effective, while maintaining appropriate accountability for and oversight of Federal research funds. NIH seeks to identify administrative requirements, policies, processes, forms, and systems, that impose unnecessary or uniquely disproportionate administrative burden on researchers and research institutions (e.g. small businesses, investigator career stage, institution type), without providing commensurate value to the stewardship, accountability, integrity, or effectiveness of NIH-supported research.
Deadline for submitting an individual response to NIH: Anyone who is interested in responding directly to NIH as an individual may do so via the response form on the NIH web page by December 8, 2026.
