Eager to explore the fundamentals and practice of engineering before entering college? Learn how engineers develop solutions to problems and how the iterative design process optimizes those solutions in this week-long course. 

Through a combination of hands-on projects, interactive lectures and real-world problem-solving, you will gain practical experience in various engineering disciplines, including electrical, mechanical, civil and biomedical engineering. Get ready to engage in team-based design challenges, learn to use appropriate tools and software to build take-home projects, and gain exclusive access to research labs and engineering facilities on campus.

Experiential Learning

During this hands-on course, you will explore the similarities and differences between the disciplines of engineering and gain insights from university faculty and students. You'll learn the engineering problem-solving approach by:

  • Building a smart night light with four functions
  • Designing, printing and soldering 3D structures
  • Experimenting with computer-aided design interfaces
  • Testing and optimizing a water filtration system
  • Competing to build a device to solve a problem
  • Building and using a sensor interface

INSTRUCTORS


Disha Ghoshal

Disha Ghoshal

Disha is a PhD fellow at the COSINE Lab in the ECE Department, specializing in Computer Engineering. Her research focuses on Bayesian Statistics, Monte Carlo Approximations, and Particle Filtering. She is mentored by Professor Mónica Bugallo. Beyond research, Disha has extensive experience teaching K-12 students through engineering camps.

Ben Sterling

Ben Sterling

Ben Sterling is a fourth year PhD student at Stony Brook University. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union, and his Master's degree in Applied Math from Stony Brook University. His current research focuses on Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Modeling, and his general research interests include signal processing, machine learning and data science. Ben has experience as a software and embedded developer and hopes to pioneer future applications of Artificial Intelligence to solve real-world problems.

Xiaokun Zhao

Xiaokun Zhao

Xiaokun Zhao is a PhD student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Stony Brook University. Her research interests include statistical signal processing, Bayesian learning, and Monte Carlo methods. For over four years, Xiaokun has been actively involved in ECE outreach programs, where she has designed, developed, and refined multiple hands-on engineering projects for summer camps and workshops. She has extensive experience teaching engineering concepts to students ranging from elementary school through the undergraduate level. Her teaching emphasizes learning by doing, encouraging students to explore engineering through interactive activities, embedded systems, and introductory programming.
