Stony Brook University Selected As a 2017 Fiske Best Buy School

STONY BROOK, NY, July 1, 2016 Stony Brook University has been included in the Fiske Guide to Colleges 2017 based on its quality academic offerings and affordability. The University, which is among 21 public and 26 private colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and the UK selected, is recognized for a broad range of subjects including academics, diversity, state-of-the-art facilities, quality of student life on campus, extracurricular activities, food, housing, location and more.

In its profile of Stony Brook University, the Fiske editors lauded the institution as one of the “academic leaders in the SUNY system,” one that “aims to be the model of a student-centered research university.” Fiske lists the natural sciences, engineering and the health fields as the major drawing cards for the University. It highlights the University’s curriculum, based on a series of learning outcomes, and organized it into four categories: Demonstrate Versatility, Explore Interconnectedness, Pursue Deeper Understanding and Prepare for Life-Long Learning.

“Access to excellence is at the core of Stony Brook's mission, so being recognized as one of the best among universities internationally by Fiske is a positive external validation for our faculty, staff and students,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. “This distinction further highlights the work of our award-winning faculty and accomplished students, and reinforces the University's continued efforts to increase the value of a Stony Brook degree.”

Editors also noted that Stony Brook has become known for its highly competitive learning environment and its high-quality professors. Fiske lists anthropology, biology, business management, health science (physical therapy, nursing, etc.), psychology and sociology as among the strongest program offerings. Also noted by Fiske is Stony Brook University Hospital, which has been ranked among the nation’s best for teaching and offers a lot of opportunities for various research programs for undergrads as well as graduate students.

The review also mentions the abundant research opportunities available, vibrant campus life, student diversity and the Division I Athletics program. Athletics is coming off its best year in history with the Men’s Basketball team making its first ever appearance in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

What Is Fiske Hearing from Stony Brook Students?

  • One student surveyed by Fiske described the University as the “complete package.”
  • Another said it has “competitive academics” with “challenging classes.”
  • “In addition to being extremely bright and high-achieving, Stony Brook’s students are by far one of the most diverse of all student bodies on Long Island,” a Stony Brook senior said.  

This recognition is the latest development in Stony Brook University rankings news. Most recently, Stony Brook was named  the #5 most valuable public university by Consumers Digest; it was  ranked # 32 out of 484 four-year public institutions by  The Business Journals ; and ranked the #37 top four-year public college and university in the U.S. News & World Report Top Public Schools Rankings ” for 2016. It has also been named as one of the best value universities by The Princeton Review and named the 30th best value in public colleges for in-state students (33rd for out-of-state students) by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance
