New Residence Halls & Dining Facility Construction Underway at
Stony Brook University
Bringing the total campus housing inventory to 10,300 beds; the largest in SUNY

STONY BROOK, N.Y., August 4, 2014 – Stony Brook University broke ground recently on Phase I of the new 759-room student housing facilities and 60,000-square-foot dining center located on Toll Drive. Scheduled to be completed by fall 2016, the new development will offer additional residential options for upperclassman, and bring the total on-campus housing inventory to more than 10,300 beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY. (Phase II is anticipated to start construction in December this year.)

The new facility on John S. Toll Drive, will feature two modern buildings. Phase I will consist of a 303 bed residence hall and Phase II with 456 beds, adjacent to the first. The units, comprised predominantly of suites with four single bedrooms, will each have a living room and two bathrooms. The facilities will be fully air conditioned, with individual thermostatic controls, and will offer high-speed wired and wireless internet access and a range of other amenities, providing a higher standard of on-campus living.  

The dining portion of the project will replace nearly all food service venues currently located in the Stony Brook Union, allowing for the conversion of the Union to a dedicated Student Services Center. The range of new dining options that will be offered include multiple dine-in and take-out choices, seating for over 800 students, and comfortable gathering places with full wireless internet access, all in state-of-the-art facilities.

Stanley Jr., MD. “The new facility will offer outstanding on-campus living and dining options; it will help us reduce the density of assignments in other residence halls and ensure that students seeking on-campus housing are accommodated . We are thrilled to have this project underway and continue to be fully committed to consistently increasing the quality of life for our students.”

Combining the dining and residence projects in an integrated site means that the new dining facilities will be close in proximity to the academic mall, the new Stony Brook Arena, the new Recreation Center, the Wang Center, and the nearly 3,000 students who will live in the immediate area.
