1,605 Degrees to be Conferred at December Commencement Ceremony
Graduates range in age from 20 – 65



The 19 th Annual Winter Commencement ceremony at Stony Brook University will recognize graduating undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. Attendees can expect:

  • Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. to deliver his commencement address.

  • Graduates that range from the age of 20 – 65 including:

    • Brian Yang , award-winning hacking competitor and Alec Day , President of Stony Brook Game Developers and member of the underrepresented community in STEM fields. Both will receive a bachelor's in Computer Science

    • Emily Ostrander , who began taking courses at Stony Brook since she was 15, will graduate with a bachelor's from the English Honors Program. Emily has been deemed one of the best TAs ever to assist in the English Department and will continue to use her teaching abilities as a children’s librarian in the public library system of New York after graduation.

    • Issac Nyandwi , the sole survivor of ethnic persecution in his home country of Berundi, has proven to thrive despite having to overcome adversity will receive a degree in Multidisciplinary Studies and begin medical school in fall 2017.  

    • EOP/AIM students Anel Gomez and Arafun Azad , who credit their academic and personal successes to advising, mentorship and the support received through the program, will receive bachelors in history/sociology and  psychology, respectively.


A total of 1,605 degrees to be conferred as follows*:   

  • 835 Bachelor Degrees

  • 620 Master’s Degrees

  • 120 Doctoral and Professional Degrees

  • 55 Certificates
