Professor Imin Kao Appointed ABET EAC Commissioner and Team Chair
Imin Kao, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stony Brook University and Executive Director
of SUNY Korea, has been appointed as a Commissioner and Team Chair for the Engineering Accreditation Commission
(EAC) of ABET.
ABET is a leading accrediting organization for college and university programs in engineering, computing, technology, and applied science. Through its specialized commissions, ABET evaluates academic programs to ensure they meet rigorous quality standards and prepare graduates for success in the global workforce. The EAC specifically oversees accreditation for engineering programs.
ABET Commissioners are experienced educators and engineering professionals selected by ABET’s member societies. Their service supports the advancement of engineering education by ensuring accredited programs maintain the quality, relevance, and innovation needed to prepare the next generation of engineers.
As an EAC Commissioner, Professor Kao will be responsible for reviewing engineering programs, participating in accreditation decisions, and helping shape the policies and criteria that guide engineering education accreditation. Commissioners lead a team of program evaluators to conduct accreditation visits, participate in commission meetings to determine accreditation actions, and contribute to the continuous improvement of accreditation standards.
"I am delighted to be appointed as an ABET-EAC Commissioner," said Professor Kao. "In my role, I will work with colleagues from academia, government, and industry as a team chair to conduct ABET accreditation visits and participate in decisions on accreditation outcomes for engineering programs."
As part of his commissioner responsibilities, Professor Kao will serve as a Team Chair, leading teams of volunteer program evaluators in conducting accreditation reviews. In this role, he will guide evaluation teams and work with institutions throughout the accreditation process.
