Recordings were acquired from several campus offices, including: Department of Communications; Media Relations; and Health Sciences Center Media Services. It is considered an artificial collection, as the recordings were not accessioned from a single source and they have been combined to form one collection.                                                     

Extent, Scope, and Content Note
The majority of the tapes were recorded between 1980 and 1995. Represented in the collection are faculty and staff in preogram and press clips that aired on regional and national television channels.

Stony Brook University Libraries' consent as the physical owner of the materials accessed does not address copyright issues that may affect publication rights.                             

Researchers who plan the eventual publication of their work should inquire as to restrictions on publication before beginning their research.                            

It is the sole responsibility of the user of Special Collections and University Archives materials to investigate the copyright status of any given work and to seek and obtain permission where needed prior to an distribution or publication.

Where Stony Brook University does not hold copyright interests, permission to publish must be obtained from the holder of the copyright interests. Permission to examine material is not authorization to publish. A separate written application for permission to publish must be submitted and authorized by the Dean of Libraries.                            

In granting permission to publish, the university does not surrender its own right thereafter to publish any of the materials from its collections, nor does it grant permission for more than one-time use.

Series Description

Sub-group I: video recordings, 1961-present, 20 cubic feet. (in-process)

Sub-group II: audio recordings, 1968-1978, 4 cubic feet. This sub-group consists of reel-to-reel and audio cassette recordings of official and unofficial university functions. Contents include:

  • audiotapes from the Poetry Festival sponsored by the Department of English in 1968;
  • reel-to-reel and cassette audiotapes of the Economic Development Conference held at the End of the Bridge in the Stony Brook Union, April 4, 1978;
  • Stony Brook Foundation dinner held on November 1, 1977 (1 reel-to-reel);
  • Ray Heatherton Breakfast Club (Dr. Terence Netter, Diane Diot), February 21, 1980 (1 cassette);
  • WUSB Village Common program (John S. Toll), March 28, 1978
