I grew up in a rural town called Saranac located in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. The area is rich with hometown values and country living. My mom is a third grade school teacher and my father is a prison guard at Clinton County Correctional Facilities. My parents encouraged me to find my dream and make something of it. I may have grew up in an area where science was not the first priority, but that did not stop my fascination for the world it creates. When I was a little girl I had a liking for pretty things. The universe to me is beautiful. I became interested in knowing how the world works, and my curiosity spread to the world beyond ours. I had second thoughts about studying in the field of astronomy, but every time I came back to it. Astronomy is all about the unknown, and asking questions we hope to someday have the answer to. I admire the work of great men. Men such as Gallileo, Newton, Socrates, Aristotle, and Einstein have inspired my way of thinking. There are books upon books of what they all did to impact our society. What we don't see an abundance of are great women. There are women who have done many amazing things, who are noted for their work. I want to become a woman who contributes to the world of astronomy and makes an impact on the world. My curiosity lies in the field of the Theory of Relativity. Einstein worked until the day of his death to figure out the connection in the universe. Many people are working on the same questions today. What is light? What is it that makes the universe all fit together so perfectly? The main question is connecting time and speed? What affects the rate at which time passes? These are all things I want to know. While I am waiting and working for the answers to my questions, I am spending my time at Stony Brook. Though I am no longer involved with choral groups or drama club productions, my love of the theater never went away. I love to read and enjoy the outdoors. I am currently in my second semester on the Stony Brook Crew team. Christina Bunker |
